See some facts about trees
Trees can be seen almost every day, but there are facts about trees that are worth knowing that you certainly don’t know.
At school, we were taught that trees are very important and in many almost desert areas, with their leafy leaves, they provide the shade that animals and humans need to survive. That’s why trees are vital elements for our life.
To celebrate the importance of trees, we will present 10 interesting facts about trunks, branches, stalks, foliage, etc.
The biggest tree in the world
The biggest tree on the planet was named Hyperion. Perhaps you have already heard about it, considering that this tree is the tallest living being on the entire planet earth.
We could call this tree a skyscraper, considering that its height can reach 115.61 meters, being only 10 meters smaller than the Sindoni Tower.
Even though its size is enormous, this majestic tree was discovered recently, in the year 2006, by Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, in the northern region of the state of California, and was named Hyperion, from Greek mythology meaning “what comes from above”.
Why are most trees green?
When it comes to plants, most of them are green, and if you’ve forgotten what that is, you need to review your biology classes to find out why.
The secret is in the chlorophyll. Plants and trees are usually this color due to the pigmentation of the substance. Chlorophyll is one of the main responsible for photosynthesis and is found in the leaves and stems of most existing plants.
This chlorophyll can also be found inside cell organelles called chloroplasts, according to the National Geographic.
The smallest tree in the world
The smallest tree in the world is called Sauce enano and is considered by many experts to be the smallest tree in the world, being found in the coldest regions of the northern hemisphere.
Most of its specimens reach no more than 6 centimeters in height, in addition, the leaves of the smallest tree in the world have a round feature and a bright green coloring. These sheets will be between 1 and 2 centimeters wide.
But there is a dispute over this title and some botanists believe that this sauce should not be considered the smallest tree in the world, as it does not fulfill its complete concept as a tree. According to experts, a woody plant with only a perennial trunk that reaches no more than 7.5 centimeters, could not be considered as a tree.
Discovering the oldest tree on planet earth
According to data, the oldest tree on earth is currently more than 9,000 years old and is called the solitary spruce. This makes it the oldest living being on the entire planet earth.
This wonder of nature can be found in Sweden, and it was only discovered in the year 2004, when scientists from the University of Umea, while carrying out a species census on Fulu Mountain in Dalarna, found this gem.
The visible part of the oldest Picea is four meters high and is 600 years old, but its root system is nearly 10,000 years old.
Find out which one provides the most oxygen
The tree called Kiri is currently considered a natural weapon in the fight against the climate change crisis that is sweeping across the world. This tree is originally from China, and it is able to purify soil that is not very fertile and also absorb 10 times more carbon dioxide than any other type of tree.
This tree can reach 27 meters in height, its trunk reaches up to 20 meters in diameter and grows at altitudes below 1,800 meters.
If we could name a super heroine tree, it would certainly be this one, given that it is capable of producing more oxygen than other existing trees, and it can also be considered the fastest growing tree on the entire planet earth.
Practically, it takes just eight years to reach the same height as a tree takes 40 years to reach.
